Tom Gracy - Green Windows

"The relationship that we have with nature is both harmonious and adversarial. It is a clue to our inner struggles, as well. We strive to control and tame our inner worlds, in the same way that we build fences in a forest, or utilize water with pipes. There is beauty in order, as well as beauty in the wild and untamed. The struggle is in finding a balance.

Much of the intensity of our relationship with nature stems from its implications on our own lives. As we do with the outside world, should we strive to control and tame our inner worlds, and, if so, to what degree? Is this process of self-control akin to building a fence in a forest, transporting water through pipes, or trimming trees and shrubbery? In doing so, we allow the natural surroundings to exist, but within the limits that we set. Are our inner selves wild, untamed forests, or lone trees growing on manicured lawns and urban sidewalks? Is one superior to the other, or do each have their place? There is beauty in order, as well as beauty in the wild and untamed. In some paintings, I sought to merge these two ideas, in others, they lean more towards one camp.

I chose to exhibit both landscape and figurative paintings within the same series, because I believe it emphasizes the idea of human beings within a context that is every bit their equal. If every painting had been figurative, the landscape would have constantly been pushed into the background. I wanted nature to be a character, struggling for its own identity and place." --  Tom Gracy
