Certain components of a garden,
like vines and flowers, shrubs and bugs are suggested in Melody
Evans’ ceramic sculpture. They are not “garden sculptures,”
however, but sculptures that use garden elements as symbols. The
body of work presented is centered on three large matrix forms that
are shaped like women’s dresses and signify garden topiaries. These
are ornamental shrubs that have been controlled, pruned and
manicured excessively.
The sheer visual beauty of her
organic shapes, surreal at times, demonstrates a metaphor for the
contemporary woman. The appearance of her matrix forms suggests the
“makeover” obsession that fashionable women have in personifying the
modern day Daphne.
