The four
artists in this exhibition each render the natural world through
various forms of abstraction. There is a common inclination toward a
focus on the horizon, whether physical or phenomenal, where the
elements of sky / land / water meet in a moment of time. The
resulting images challenge our perception of the conscious world
through perceptions of light, color and form.

Joseph Bellacera invigorates our
sensory experience with pattern and atmospheric
explorations of light to illustrate the mystery and awe
of discovery in the terrain of our agricultural
landscape. Hovering on the edge of abstraction, the
texture and surface of his paintings retain a sense of
immediacy and movement in a multi-dimensional world.

Leslie C. Birleson
is a conceptual artist whose oeuvre ranges from carved granite and
mosaic tile to screenprint and light installations. Here we see his
emotional response to life along the Sacramento River levees through
paint on canvas. The seasons bring a change of palette and texture,
from the lush rain of winter to the dry heat of summer, but the
elements of land and water remain constant along the shoreline.

Barbara Rainforth examines the horizon, where earth meets
sky, through saturated colors and a blending of multiple
perspectives to capture the tension between these diverse elements
at the threshold of their melding point. Her line and brushstroke
illustrate the panorama with the immediacy of an expressionistic
response.

Laura Hohlwein challenges our conscious mind within the image
frame by dynamically combining interior and exterior settings to
create a fresh visual experience. By simulating a specific moment,
or thought process, the connection of time and space is conveyed as
a profound personal experience relative to the physical world.
